Advisory work

The Institute of Marine Research provides advice relating to the whole marine food chain from the sea to our tables. We act as advisers to the management authorities, the Ministry and other stakeholders. As well as research, we also have extensive monitoring programmes that help us to provide the advice that is requested of us.

We have specialists in fields ranging from coastal areas and fjords to the wide oceans, and from small plankton through benthic fauna and fish stocks to the largest sea mammals. Other important fields include aquaculture, safe and healthy seafood and climate change.

Aquaculture

The Institute of Marine Research shall be a central advisor to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, the Directorate of Fisheries, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and other relevant authorities in the development of sustainable aquaculture.

Research Programmes

The main activities for the Institute of Marine Research are monitoring, research and advice. The research and advisory programmes are responsible for delivering advice to the authorities, industries, and the society in general.

Population table

In this table you will find information about stocks that the IMR monitors and advises on. The overview is under development, and the table will gradually be expanded with information on monitoring and advisory processes, including data and models.

Quota advice

Quota advices are IMR's professional advice for the annual fisheries negotiations between Norway and other parties.
