Blue mussels have been cultivated in Norway since the 1980s, but the total production is still very modest compared to the potential. In recent years, cultivation of blue mussels in a one-year cycle for use in fish feed has started, providing new opportunities for blue mussel producers.
Blue mussel powder is perhaps the easiest of the new marine resources to use for fish feed, but there is still development work needed.
The Institute of Marine Research is working to identify foreign substances and nutrients in blue mussel meal. We are also researching the effect of algal toxins from mussels in salmon feed.
