My main field of interest is feed and food safety of chemical substances in aquaculture. I have been working with risk assessment of undesirable chemical residues and supplements in novel sustainable aquafeeds. The risk assessment includes effects on a) fish health, b) environment, and c) consequences for food safety.
In the toxicological evaluation of these compounds the following steps are used
* The chemical residues are identified by using of wide-scope analytical screening methods, including a nontarget in silico work-flow for the identification of metabolites.
*The effects on fish health are assessed using chemical-specific markers of toxicity that are derived from a non-target mode of action (MOA) assessment.
* Feed-to-food safety is assessed by physiological based toxicokinetic (PBTK) models that predict the transfer of chemicals and their metabolites from feed to the edible part of the fish during a production cycle.
In these toxicological assessments we use the international risk models and methods established by the European Food Safety Authorities (EFSA)
