I work in the field of fish nutrition with main focus on the effects of dietary ingredients and -composition on Atlantic salmon metabolism and health. To be able to reach the goal of more sustainable fish diets, less dependent on marine resources, we need to explore new feed ingredients and investigate their effects on the fish. Especially the composition of the lipid component of the feed has been of special interest to me, looking at metabolic effects of diets with low omega-3 content, varying omega-3/omega-6, and different contents of EPA, saturated fatty acids and sterols due to changes in the feed ingredients. The effects of differing dietary lipid composition on a fish can be broad, ranging from differences in membrane composition and tissue lipid composition, changes in metabolism (gene expression and metabolite activity) and can also affect growth and general performance. I have also looked at the suitability of insects as feed ingredients and the possibility of tailoring their nutrient composition. To gain knowledge on lipid metabolism and the suitability of different feed ingredients I use feeding trials with salmon, cell trials as well as having done trials with model membranes and zebra fish.
