Based on our knowledge of fish behaviour and fishing gear technology, the group supports the fisheries management authorities, the fishing industry and the Institute’s other groups by developing and adapting energy-efficient, environmentally and resource-friendly capture methods, and by developing improved methods for sampling marine organisms for resources studies

Areas of scientific responsibility:

  • Support the Norwegian fishing industry by developing and adapting energy-efficient, environmentally and resources-friendly capture methods
  • Provide suitable conditions for scientifically based technical regulation of fisheries and contribute to the analysis and evaluation of the consequences of such regulations
  • Contribute to more accurate and precise stock assessments through improved gear-based sampling
  • Support developing countries by supplying expertise in fish-capture technology
  • Supply fish-capture expertise to regional, national and international processes

Expertise:

  • Catch-related behaviour general expertise in passive (fish-pot, long-line, gillnet) and active (trawl, deepwater trawl , seine-net) gears
  • By-catch, unintended mortality, habitat impact and energy consumption of different types of gears
  • Interactions between petroleum and fishing activities
  • Experimental methodology and the development and operation of instrumentation for fish-capture and behavioural experiments
  • Data-processing and statistics, and processing of video and photo material
