Jeg har lang fartstid innenfor sjøpattedyrforskning, helt fra mastergrad i zoologi ved Stockholms Universitet 1996-1997. Jeg jobbet mange år med sørlig elefantsel i Sørishavet, bl.a. gjennom doktorgrad på University of St Andrews knyttet til Australian Antarctic Division i Australia. Jeg har jobbet mye med utvikling av innovative instrumenteringsmetoder for studier av vandringsmønster og økofysiologi hos sjøpattedyr, samt instrumentering for innsamling av oseanografiske data ved hjelp av sjøpattedyr. Jeg har organisert et flertall forskningsekspedisjoner til øyer i Sørishavet, og var ekspedisjonsleder på ekspedisjonen til Bouvetøya i 2007-2008, organisert av Norsk Polarinstitutt. Siden 2018 er jeg ansatt på Havforskningsinstituttet, knyttet til gruppa for sjøpattedyr. Jeg er ansvarlig for populasjonsmodellering og assessment av ishavssel (grønlandssel og klappmyss).
