Min faglige interesse innen økologi er biodiversitet og næringsnett. Jeg er utdannet økolog/etolog med særlig erfaring innen forskning på krabbe og hummer. Jeg har vært involvert i studier av krepsdyr nevrologi, biologi, økologi og atferd, både grunnforskning og i forvaltnings- og havbeitesammenheng. For tiden er jeg hovedsakelig involvert i rådgiving inn mot helhetlig økosystembasert havforvaltning gjennom oppdrag for å utvikle og evaluere de norske havforvaltningsplanene som deltaker i sekretariatet for Overvåkingsgruppa for de norske Havforvaltningsplanene og med i havforskningens ekspertgruppe i forhold til Norsk-Russisk miljøsamarabeid. Jeg er med i Hjortsenteret for studier av dynamikken i marine økosystem. Jeg har vært Havforskningsinstituttets ansvarlige inn mot miljødirektorartes prosjekt Naturindekser i Norge.
Internasjonalt er jeg involvert i ICES: WGECO, WGINOR, WGIBAR, WGMLEBP, og som IMR-representant ved ICES "advisory drafts" gruppene ADGBY og ADGFBI. Jeg er tidvis aktiv medlem i OSPAR ICG-COBAM og i dialog med NOAA (USA om helhetlig økosystem vurderinger (IEA). Jeg bidrar med forslag i høringer inn mot det internasjonale panelet for biodiversitet og økosystemtjenester (IPBES). Jeg deltar i IndiSeas 2 prosjektet som publiserer fagartikler med formål å se globalt på beregninger og modellering av naturlige og menneskelige påvirkninger på marine ressurser, og følger på ressursene og på fiskerisamfunn. Jeg har vært med i Eu-prosjekter som har studert hummer ved bunnslåing (LEAR 1997-1999), PartiSeaPate (marine planløsninger for Østersjøen) og EEA-prosjektet “Public participation in the MSP in Poland". I 2016 er jeg co-chair i arbeidsgruppen i European Marine Board, for å utrede erfaringer og råd for Citizen Science.
I tillegg har jeg vært styremedlem i Artsdatabanken (2012-2015), jeg er arbeidsgruppeansvarlig fra 2015 for å gi studenter praksiserfaring innenfor BioCEED (wp 7); ved senter for fremragende utdannelse i biologi. Jeg er også prosjektleder for skolesamarbeid mellom Havforskningen og grunnskolen (Livet i fjæra), og deltaker også i samarbeid mot videregående skoler og sitter i rådgivingsgruppa for Havforskerskolen ved Havforskningsinstituttet. Jeg holder foredrag for universitetsstudenter og populærforedrag etter behov. Jeg har også veiledet en rekke Masterstudenter som har studert hummer og får oppgaver gjennom ”spør en forsker” for Miljølære.no og havforskningsinstituttets facebookside. Jeg er dessuten medlem og revisor for Foreningen for nNorske Etooger.
